Uses:
\nGenerally known as baking soda, people use meetha soda as a domestic antacid for heartburn and other related conditions. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent for the spleen and physicians include it in preparations intended to stimulate appetite and correct digestion. Furthermore, when combined with other suitable drugs, it serves as an anti-phlegmatic expectorant to treat productive cough and asthma. \n \nMoreover, people use it in cooking of pulses and lentils to cook them easily and soft. \n \nIn cooking, baking soda basically, serves as a leavening agent in baking. When it reacts with acid or heats up, it releases carbon dioxide, causing batter expansion and giving cakes, quick breads, soda bread, and other baked and fried foods their characteristic texture and grain. \n \nBaking powder, also used in cooking, contains approximately 30% bicarbonate along with various acidic ingredients activated by water, eliminating the need for additional acids in cooking. Beyond its culinary uses, further baking soda possesses weak disinfectant properties and may act as a fungicide against certain organisms. \n \nSodium bicarbonate can also extinguish small grease or electrical fires when thrown over the fire, as it releases carbon dioxide when heated. However, it's not recommended for fires in deep fryers, as the sudden gas release may cause grease to splatter. \n \nAdditionally, athletes consume sodium bicarbonate as a sports supplement to enhance muscular endurance. \nRecommended dosage:
\n60 to 180mg \nPrecaution:
\nAbove 2 g. the salts may prove fatal. Severe excoriation is caused in stomach and intestines and as a result of continuous consumption of large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and in case of non-attention, death may result.
